Old Delhi's 17th-century bazaar
Chandni Chowk Travel Guide
Chandni Chowk is Old Delhi's original market street, laid out by Shah Jahan's daughter in the 1600s — still the densest, loudest, most food-driven few blocks in the capital.
Top attractions
- Red Fort and Jama Masjid at either end of the main road
- Paranthe Wali Gali for stuffed parathas
- Kinari Bazaar for wedding trims and jewellery
- Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib
- Fatehpuri Masjid
Culture
The street still runs on its Mughal-era trade specialisations — one lane for spices, one for silver, one for saris — a layout largely unchanged in 300+ years.
Local food
Jalebi at Old Famous Jalebi Wala, chaat at Chandni Chowk's countless stalls, and parathas stuffed with everything from potato to rabri.
Best time to visit
October to March; go early morning (before 10am) to beat both the heat and the crowds.
